Memorial Day Tool Sales and the Quiet Automation Gap Nobody's Talking About

The newer facilities are running what we used to call "lights out" sections. Not the whole plant, but chunks of it. Battery pack assembly especially. Those lithium cells are finicky, and robots don't get tired at 3am and put one in backwards. I saw the defect rate data once. Humans weren't even close.

So when you're buying a DeWalt 20V MAX kit for $199 (down from $329, according to the sale), part of why that price point is possible is because the labor content has dropped dramatically. I'm not saying that's good or bad, I'll be honest, I have complicated feelings about it. But it's real.

The Gap That Bothers Me

Here's what I keep chewing on. Consumer tech coverage treats these tools like they appear magically on shelves. The ZDNet piece mentions "everything you need for DIY projects and home repairs" but nothing about where these things come from. And industrial automation coverage (what little exists outside trade pubs) treats manufacturing like it's a separate universe from the stuff you buy.

It's the same object. The drill doesn't know it's in two different news categories.

I called Frank last week to ask what he's seeing. He's still at a systems integrator in the Midwest, does a lot of work with domestic tool production. He said, and I'm paraphrasing here since I didn't record it, that the reshoring push has been real but the jobs numbers everyone celebrates are misleading. A "new 500-person facility" might have 500 people on paper but 200 of them are maintaining robots, not running machines. The other 300 are spread across three shifts doing work that couldn't be automated yet.

Yet. That word does a lot of heavy lifting.

What This Means for Your $279 Impact Driver

Probably nothing, honestly. The tool will work fine. Milwaukee makes good stuff, always has. DeWalt's quality has been, sort of inconsistent in my experience, but their flagships are solid.

But if you're curious about the broader picture: the power tool industry is a decent proxy for mid-complexity manufacturing automation. Not as advanced as automotive, not as manual as furniture. Right in the middle. And that middle is where the most interesting automation battles are happening right now.

The deals will come and go. Memorial Day, Labor Day (there's some irony there), Black Friday. The factories making this stuff will keep getting more automated. And the coverage will keep treating these as completely separate stories.

I don't have a neat conclusion here. Just something that's been rattling around in my head while everyone else debates whether the Ryobi bundle is actually worth it.

It probably is, by the way. Those brushless motors are decent now.
