Amazon's AI Search Images: A Solution Looking for a Problem

Here's the thing. Amazon already has visual search. You can upload a photo of something you want, and it'll find similar products. That makes sense. You see a chair you like at a friend's house, snap a picture, search for it.

But generating a fake image from a text description, then using that fake image to search? That's adding a step. Actually, it's adding a step that introduces potential errors, because now you're hoping the AI correctly interpreted "draped collar" before you even get to the search results.

I called my old colleague Frank, who spent years working on machine vision systems for warehouse sorting. His reaction: "So they're using AI to create an image, then using AI to match that image to products? That's two chances to get it wrong instead of one."

He's not wrong.

The Warehouse Automation Angle

Now, I should say, Amazon's been doing genuinely impressive work in robotics and automation. Their warehouse systems are sophisticated. The Kiva robots (which they bought back in 2012, renamed to Amazon Robotics) changed how fulfillment centers operate. I've toured facilities that would have seemed like science fiction when I started in this industry.

But this search feature isn't that. This is consumer-facing AI that seems designed to generate headlines about Amazon using AI, rather than to solve an actual shopping friction point.

It's too early to say whether customers will actually use this. Maybe I'm being an old cynic. Maybe there's a generation of shoppers who think in AI-generated images rather than text. But I've been wrong before, and I've been right before, and my gut says this is a feature that'll quietly disappear in two years.

The Bigger Question

What concerns me more is the trend this represents. Companies are bolting AI onto everything, whether it improves the experience or not. I saw it happen with "smart" features in industrial equipment in the early 2010s. Touchscreens on machines that didn't need touchscreens. Connectivity for connectivity's sake.

Some of those features stuck around because they genuinely helped. Most didn't.

Amazon's search already works reasonably well. If you type "cowl neck shirt," you get cowl neck shirts. If you type "draped collar shirt," you get, well, shirts with draped collars. The AI image generation adds complexity without obvious benefit.

Maybe there's data I don't have access to. Maybe Amazon's research shows that shoppers abandon searches because they can't visualize what they want. I only found two sources on this announcement, and neither included any user research or metrics.

But based on what's public, this looks like a demo day special to me. Impressive technology. Unclear purpose.

I'll check back in a year and see if I was wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.
