The Agentic AI Gold Rush Is Here, and I've Seen This Movie Before

The enterprise angle. And then there's the Accenture partnership. OpenAI announced they're working with Accenture to "bring agentic AI capabilities into the core" of enterprise businesses. This is where the rubber meets the road, or doesn't. Accenture is one of the biggest consulting firms in the world, and if they're betting on agentic AI, that means real money is about to flow into actual implementations.

Here's what I find telling: the announcement talks about "new levels of growth" but doesn't give any specific numbers or case studies. That's usually a sign that we're still in the "trust us, it'll be great" phase rather than the "here's proof it works" phase. I've seen this with every enterprise tech wave going back to the ERP boom of the 90s. The consultants show up first, the results come later (sometimes much later, sometimes never).

The SDK updates tell the real story. Buried in all this is something more concrete: OpenAI updated their Agents SDK with what they call "native sandbox execution" and a "model-native harness." Translation: they're making it easier for developers to build agents that can actually do things (run code, manipulate files, use tools) without immediately becoming security nightmares.

This is actually important! One of the biggest problems with AI agents is that giving them real capabilities means giving them real ways to screw up. An agent that can send emails on your behalf can also send embarrassing emails on your behalf. An agent that can execute code can execute bad code. The sandbox approach is an attempt to let agents do useful work while limiting the blast radius when things go wrong.

But here's what the announcement doesn't say: how well does this actually work in practice? What happens when an agent needs to do something outside the sandbox? How do you handle the inevitable edge cases where the safety guardrails conflict with getting the job done? These are hard problems, and I haven't seen anyone demonstrate they've solved them at scale.

So what do I actually think? Look, I'm not saying agentic AI is vaporware. The underlying technology is real, and some of the early applications are genuinely useful. I use AI assistants every day for research, drafting, and analysis. They save me time. But the current hype cycle is running way ahead of the current capabilities.

The pattern I keep seeing is this: impressive demo, breathless announcement, foundation formed, standards proposed, enterprise partnerships announced, and then... a long slog of actually making things work. The self-driving car industry promised fully autonomous vehicles by 2020. It's 2025 and we're still arguing about whether robotaxis are safe enough for San Francisco. I'm not saying agentic AI will follow the same trajectory, but I'm not saying it won't either.

What I'd watch for is this: actual case studies with actual numbers. Not "we helped a company achieve new levels of growth" but "we helped Company X reduce processing time by 40% on Task Y." Not "140,000 GitHub stars" but "deployed in production at 50 companies handling real workloads." The specifics matter.

Until then, I'd be cautious about the hype. The technology is interesting, the investment is real, and some version of agentic AI will probably become important. But the timeline? The capabilities? The safety? We don't know yet. Anyone who tells you they do know is selling something.
