Google's AI Pointer: Clever Interface Work, But Who Actually Needs This?

When you're controlling a robot arm that can exert hundreds of newtons of force, you need to know exactly what clicking a button will do. An AI that "helpfully" interprets your intent and suggests alternative actions? That's a liability nightmare waiting to happen.

Now, I'm not saying there's no place for AI in industrial interfaces. We've been using predictive maintenance algorithms for years, and the new generation of vision systems is genuinely impressive. But those are background processes, not something that changes how your basic input device behaves.

The consulting angle

What caught my eye was DeepMind's other announcement about partnering with global consultancies to bring AI to enterprises. That tells me where they think the money is. Not in selling software directly, but in getting McKinsey and Accenture to recommend Google's AI stack to their Fortune 500 clients.

I'll be honest, I've seen this movie before. Big tech company develops flashy interface technology, consultants sell it to executives who don't understand the shop floor, and then the actual operators have to figure out how to work around it. The number of "AI-powered" systems I've seen gathering dust in warehouses because they didn't actually solve a real problem, it's depressing.

Maybe I'm being too harsh. The consumer applications might be genuinely useful. If you're a knowledge worker who spends all day in a browser, having your cursor anticipate what you need could save real time. I don't know, I'm not that guy anymore.

But if Google thinks this is going to revolutionize industrial automation, they're going to be disappointed. The factory floor has different needs than a marketing department. We need interfaces that are predictable, robust, and don't require an internet connection to function. An AI pointer that gets confused when the network latency spikes isn't going to cut it.

It remains unclear whether DeepMind has any serious industrial ambitions for this technology, or if it's purely a consumer play. Their announcements don't say. But given the consulting partnerships, I suspect they're hoping enterprise adoption will follow the usual path: executives see a demo, get excited, and mandate implementation before anyone asks the people who'll actually use it.

We'll see. I've been wrong before. But when I was at Kuka, we had a saying: the best interface is the one the operator forgets is there. An AI that keeps offering suggestions? That's the opposite of invisible.
