Why I'm skeptical that Memorial Day sales tell us anything about the robotics market

Consumer electronics have a very specific lifecycle. Products launch at premium prices, early adopters pay up, and then over 12 to 18 months, prices gradually fall until you see those big Memorial Day and Black Friday discounts. The whole system depends on predictable manufacturing costs, established supply chains, and massive scale.

Robotics doesn't work like that. Not yet.

The humanoid robots currently being deployed cost somewhere in the range of $30,000 to $150,000 per unit, though honestly, most companies won't disclose exact figures. Even if they wanted to sell to consumers, which most don't, the economics just aren't there for a Memorial Day markdown.

You might be wondering: what about the cheaper robots? The robot vacuums, the robot mops, the various kitchen gadgets that promise automation?

They exist. They're on sale. But they're also, tbh, kind of stuck. The Roomba hasn't gotten dramatically better in years. Robot lawn mowers remain a niche product with limited adoption. The smart home assistant robots that companies keep trying to launch (remember Jibo? Kuri? Vector?) have mostly failed.

There's a weird valley between "cheap automation that kind of works" and "expensive robots that might transform everything." And right now, nothing interesting is happening in the middle.

So what does this mean for humanoids?

I've been covering the humanoid space for a while now, and I keep coming back to this question: when does this stuff actually reach normal people?

The companies have answers, sort of. Figure talks about scaling manufacturing. Tesla claims the Optimus will eventually cost less than a car. Various startups promise household robots within five to seven years.

But I should know this better than I do: what's the actual path from "pilot program in a BMW factory" to "on sale at Costco"?

The consumer electronics industry solved this decades ago. They figured out how to take expensive technology and systematically drive down costs through scale, competition, and incremental improvement. Your iPhone contains more computing power than a 1990s supercomputer, and it costs less than a nice dinner for two (well, for the base model anyway).

Robotics hasn't had that moment yet. The manufacturing processes are still expensive. The components, especially the actuators and sensors needed for humanoid dexterity, remain costly. And the software, the AI that makes these things actually useful, is still being figured out.

I'm not saying it won't happen. I think it probably will. But the timeline feels uncertain in a way that consumer electronics timelines don't.

What happens next

Here's what I think is actually interesting about the Memorial Day sales gap.

Right now, robotics is an industrial story. The companies making progress are focused on warehouses, factories, logistics. They're selling to businesses that can absorb high costs and tolerate imperfect performance because the alternative (human labor in dangerous or repetitive jobs) is getting more expensive and harder to find.

This is probably the right strategy. It's how a lot of transformative technologies mature: start with high-value industrial applications, drive down costs through iteration, eventually reach consumers.

But it means we might be waiting longer than the hype suggests.

When I talk to people in the industry (and I should be clear, these are informal conversations, not official statements), there's a pretty wide range of opinions on consumer timelines. Some think we're five years away from useful household robots. Others say ten to fifteen years is more realistic. A few are skeptical it happens at all in any meaningful way.

The honest answer is: we don't know yet. The technology is advancing fast, but so are the expectations. And the gap between "impressive demo" and "reliable product you'd actually buy" remains substantial.

So this Memorial Day, I'll probably pick up one of those iPad deals. Maybe a new pair of AirPods if the price is right. The consumer electronics ecosystem works. It delivers real value at accessible prices.

The robots will have to wait. And that's probably fine, for now. But I'll keep watching for the year when humanoids finally show up in the holiday sales. That's when we'll know something has really changed.

Until then, I'll keep asking the harder questions. That's sort of the job.
