Here's what 12 years of industrial robotics taught me that applies directly to your lawn: weatherproofing ratings matter more than cutting width. I've seen too many robots, big and small, die from moisture ingress. If the spec sheet doesn't prominently list an IP rating of at least IP65, walk away. Doesn't matter how good the sale price is.

Battery chemistry is the other thing. The cheaper units still use older lithium-ion cells that degrade faster in heat. Your mower sits outside in summer. In direct sun. This is not complicated math, but manufacturers love to bury cell specifications.

The navigation system is where things get interesting, actually, let me be precise, where things get expensive. Boundary wire systems work fine but require installation that's either tedious (DIY) or costly (professional). GPS-based mowers struggle with tree cover and can wander. The newest vision-based systems using onboard cameras and AI are legitimately good, I've tested two models this spring, but they start around $2,000 even with holiday discounts.

Is This the Right Year to Buy?

I'll be honest: I don't know. The technology is improving fast enough that waiting another year might get you significantly better navigation at the same price point. But if your weekends are currently eaten by mowing and you value that time, the current generation works well enough.

What remains unclear is how these companies will handle software support long-term. Industrial robot manufacturers commit to decade-plus support cycles. Consumer robotics? Some of these startups might not exist in five years. Your fancy mower becomes a paperweight if the app stops working and there's no firmware updates.

My advice: if you're buying during these Memorial Day sales, stick with established brands that have been in the outdoor power equipment space for at least a decade. They're more likely to still be around when your mower needs service. The deals on newer brands might look better on paper, but I've seen this movie before in industrial automation. The cheap integrators always disappear first.

For what it's worth, I'm not buying anything this weekend. My three-year-old mower still runs fine, and I'm curious what the vision systems will cost next spring. But if yours just died and you need something now, there are worse times to shop than a holiday sale. Just do your homework on the engineering, not just the discount percentage.
