How do soft grippers actually work?

Most commercial soft grippers use pneumatic actuation, meaning they inflate and deflate with air pressure to open and close. The gripper fingers are typically made from silicone or similar elastomers, materials that can deform repeatedly without fatigue.

When air pressure increases, the fingers curl inward. When it decreases, they relax open. The beauty of this approach is that the gripper naturally adapts to whatever shape it encounters. A round apple and an oblong cucumber require no reprogramming, just the same gentle squeeze.

Some newer designs incorporate sensors that detect how much an object is deforming under grip, allowing the robot to adjust pressure in real time. This feedback loop prevents both dropping (too little pressure) and crushing (too much).

Why did this take so long?

Soft robotics has been a research darling for over a decade. The delay in commercialization came down to several practical challenges.

First, durability. Early soft grippers wore out quickly in industrial settings. The constant inflation cycles degraded the materials faster than laboratory testing predicted. Manufacturers have now developed tougher elastomers and better sealing methods.

Second, speed. Pneumatic systems are inherently slower than electric motors. Food processing lines move fast, and early soft grippers could not keep pace. Improved valve designs and hybrid systems have closed this gap.

Third, hygiene. Food processing demands equipment that can be cleaned and sanitized repeatedly. Soft materials with their folds and crevices posed contamination risks. Current designs use food-safe materials and smoother geometries that meet regulatory requirements.

What comes next?

Food processing is likely just the beginning. The same gentle handling that works for produce could apply to pharmaceuticals, consumer electronics assembly, and e-commerce fulfillment where products vary widely in shape and fragility.

The broader significance is what this deployment proves: soft robotics can work outside controlled research environments. That validation should accelerate investment and development across the field.

For food manufacturers specifically, the technology arrives at a critical moment. Labor availability in processing plants has declined steadily, while consumer demand for fresh, minimally processed foods has increased.
