OpenAI's Codex Agent: What It Means for Industrial Automation Software

Here's the thing. When I was at Kuka, we had junior engineers who did exactly this. Write code, run simulation, watch it fail spectacularly, fix the obvious mistake, run again. The good ones got faster at the loop. The great ones learned to anticipate failure modes before running anything.

Can Codex anticipate? That remains unclear from what they've published. They talk about iterating until tests pass, but passing tests and writing robust code aren't the same thing. Any engineer worth their salt knows you can write tests that pass while missing edge cases that'll crash your production line at 3am on a Saturday.

So what

Look, I'm not here to say this is useless or revolutionary (I hate that word). It's a tool. Probably a good one for certain applications.

But industrial automation software isn't a web app. When I was debugging robot arm trajectories, a bug didn't mean a 404 error. It meant a 200kg arm moving somewhere it shouldn't. The stakes are different.

What I'd want to know, and what OpenAI hasn't addressed as far as I can tell, is how this performs on embedded systems, real-time constraints, safety-critical code. The stuff that actually runs factories. They mention "a variety of environments" in training but don't get specific. That vagueness makes me nervous.

What happens next

I suspect we'll see these tools creep into industrial software development regardless of my concerns. The productivity gains are too attractive. Some integration engineer at an automation company is probably already using it to write HMI code or data logging scripts. The low-stakes stuff.

The question is whether it stays there or whether someone decides to point it at motion control or safety PLCs. That's where I'd pump the brakes.

I've been wrong before, though. Twenty years ago I said touchscreens on factory floors would never catch on. Too fragile, I said. Now they're everywhere. So maybe in a decade I'll be writing about how Codex-7 or whatever runs half the world's robot arms and I was just being an old man yelling at clouds.

But not yet. Not with what they've shown so far.
