It means the person who wrote the motion planning algorithm might actually visit the assembly line where it's deployed. That sounds basic, but it's rare. Most Western robotics companies have their ML teams in one city, their hardware teams in another, and their manufacturing partners on a different continent.

What this means for industrial automation

For companies competing in industrial robotics, the implications are, well, multiple things. Second, the combination of retained talent plus export-driven capital plus government support creates a competitive environment that's genuinely difficult to match.

I'm not arguing China has won anything. Manufacturing robotics is a long game, and incumbents like Fanuc, ABB, and KUKA have decades of deployment experience that doesn't evaporate overnight. But the structural advantages are shifting in ways that deserve more attention than the usual startup funding announcements.
