TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 Ticket Sale Tells Us Nothing About Robotics, and That's the Story

Funding is tightening. When money gets scarce, marketing budgets shrink first. Fewer splashy announcements, fewer conference sponsorships, fewer reasons to generate press.

The hard problems are harder than expected. Manipulation, navigation in unstructured environments, genuine autonomy. These don't get solved on quarterly timelines.

I should know this better, but I don't have solid data on which explanation is right. Probably all three, in varying degrees depending on the company.

The Conference Question

Disrupt 2026 will presumably have robotics content. The conference has leaned into the space over the past couple years, and there's no reason to think that changes. But it's worth noting that the promotional material I've seen focuses entirely on networking and deal-making, not on specific robotics programming or speakers.

That's not a criticism, exactly. Conferences are about connections. But when the robotics beat's biggest news is "buy tickets to hear about robotics later," it raises questions about what we're all actually waiting for.

Maybe the real announcements are being saved for the conference itself. Companies do that. Or maybe we're in a genuine lull, a period where the industry consolidates and figures out what's actually possible versus what looked good in a controlled demo.

What I'm Watching For

The next few months will be telling. I'm looking for:

• Deployment numbers, not unit sales projections
• Reliability data from real-world pilots
• Honest assessments of what's working and what isn't

We don't have much of any of that right now. What we have is a ticket sale.
