Microsoft Responds to the AI Graduation Boos, and Honestly It's More Interesting Than You'd Expect

According to Bloomberg, Microsoft's blog post is positioned as something like an answer to that frustration. Smith apparently acknowledges the anxiety is real. I haven't read every word of the full post, tbh, but the fact that it runs to 3,100 words suggests at minimum that someone at Microsoft is trying to engage with the criticism rather than just dismiss it.

Honestly, I'm not sure that's enough. Writing a long blog post about why people are upset with AI, while continuing to build and deploy AI at scale, is a bit like a construction company publishing a thoughtful essay about noise pollution. The gesture is noted. The construction continues.

What strikes me about the graduation boo phenomenon is how it cuts across the usual political lines. This isn't a left-versus-right thing, or a tech-savvy-versus-luddite thing. These are students at universities, many of whom have been using AI tools throughout their education. They're not unfamiliar with the technology. They're skeptical of the specific story being told about it, which is the triumphalist version where AI is unambiguously good and the main thing you should feel is grateful.

That story is, I think, increasingly hard to sell. Not because AI isn't capable of remarkable things, it clearly is, but because the people selling it have a credibility problem. When the same executives who stand to benefit enormously from AI adoption are also the ones telling workers not to worry, the reassurance doesn't land. It shouldn't land. That's not cynicism, that's just basic reasoning about incentives.

This raises questions about how the robotics industry is going to handle the same dynamic. Well, multiple things, actually. How do you introduce humanoid robots into workplaces without triggering the same backlash? How do you talk about automation in a way that doesn't sound like a commencement speech in Florida? These aren't rhetorical questions. Companies like Figure, 1X, Agility, and Boston Dynamics are going to face versions of this conversation very soon, if they aren't already.

The honest answer is that nobody's really figured it out yet. Some argue that the solution is retraining programs and genuine investment in worker transitions. Others counter that the pace of deployment will outrun any retraining effort, making those promises hollow. It's too early to say which camp is right, and I'd be suspicious of anyone who tells you otherwise with confidence.

What I keep coming back to is the gap between how AI is discussed at the executive level and how it lands with everyone else. Brad Smith writing 3,100 words is, in its own way, a symptom of that gap. The communication effort is enormous precisely because the trust isn't there. And trust, once it's gone, doesn't come back because someone published a thoughtful blog post.

For the robotics world specifically, I think the lesson from the graduation boos is something like: lead with honesty about tradeoffs, not just excitement about capabilities. The students booing in Florida aren't wrong that AI (and by extension, the physical AI systems coming next) will disrupt the work they trained for. Pretending otherwise, or burying the acknowledgment in paragraph 47 of a 3,100-word post, isn't going to cut it.

I should be clearer about the limits of what I'm working with here. What we know is that Microsoft felt the boos were significant enough to respond to at length, and that the response was framed as a conversation starter rather than a rebuttal.

What I do know is that a room full of new graduates choosing to boo rather than politely applaud is a signal worth taking seriously, and not just for Microsoft. The companies building the physical robots that will actually show up in those graduates' workplaces should probably be paying attention too.
