Meredith Whitney Says AI Is Propping Up the Economy. She's Not Wrong.

Sort of. I called my old colleague at Fanuc America last month (we go back to a trade show in Detroit, must have been 2009). He said their order books are full through Q3. Not record-breaking, but steady. The interesting bit is who's ordering. It's not just automotive anymore. Logistics, food processing, even some sectors I wouldn't have expected, like textiles.

The AI angle is real but, and this is important, it's not the sci-fi version people imagine. Most of what's driving orders is machine vision improvements and better path planning software. Stuff that makes existing robots smarter, not humanoid robots taking over warehouses. At least not yet.

Whitney's broader point about AI and economic health seems to track, but I'd want to see more specific data. She didn't disclose figures in the clips I watched, and Bloomberg's coverage was pretty high-level. It's too early to say whether this AI-driven resilience is structural or just a sugar rush from VC money.

What About the Inflation Part?

This is where it gets, well, complicated. Whitney mentioned rising inflation alongside AI expansion. In my experience, automation is supposed to be deflationary. You replace expensive human labour with cheaper robot labour, costs go down, prices stabilize. That was the pitch I made to plant managers for over a decade.

But here's what I think is happening (and I could be wrong): the AI buildout itself is inflationary. You need chips, you need power, you need skilled technicians to install and maintain these systems. Nvidia isn't giving GPUs away. Data centres are basically small power plants now. So you've got this weird situation where AI might reduce costs in some areas while driving them up in others.

I remember when we installed one of the first vision-guided bin picking systems at a tier-one supplier outside of Stuttgart. The hardware was expensive, but the real cost was the two months of integration work. That hasn't changed much, even with better software.

Should We Believe the Hype?

Look, I've seen enough "this changes everything" moments in this industry to be skeptical. Remember when collaborative robots were going to put a Sawyer in every machine shop? That didn't quite pan out the way Rethink Robotics hoped. But I've also seen genuine inflection points. The KUKA LBR iiwa really did change how we thought about human-robot interaction.

Whitney's not a robotics person, she's a markets person. But markets eventually reflect what's happening in the real economy, and what's happening is that companies are spending real money on AI and automation. Whether that spending is smart or just FOMO (fear of missing out, for those of you who somehow avoided the last decade), remains unclear.

I'd feel better about all this if I saw more concrete productivity numbers. For now, I'll take Whitney's optimism with a grain of salt. But only a grain. She's been right before when others weren't.
