Microsoft Build 2026: What we actually know about the new AI models

The Windows integration angle is potentially more interesting from a technical standpoint. AI models running locally on Windows devices represent a genuinely different deployment paradigm than cloud-based inference. Microsoft just announced the Surface Laptop Ultra powered by Nvidia's RTX Spark, which suggests the company is serious about on-device AI capabilities. The question is whether these "new AI models in Windows" are meaningfully different from what we've seen with Copilot+ PC features, or whether this is incremental improvement dressed up in conference keynote language.

The timing of this conference feels significant in ways that go beyond the usual tech industry theater. Tom Warren's reporting for The Verge notes that "trust in Windows and GitHub is at an all-time low," which is a striking admission to make in the lead-up to a developer conference. GitHub Copilot has faced criticism from developers concerned about code licensing and quality. Windows 11 adoption has been slower than Microsoft hoped. The company's AI push has been aggressive but not always well-received by the developer community it needs to keep engaged.

This is Microsoft's attempt to reconnect, and the move to a smaller, more intimate venue reads as deliberate positioning. Rather than the massive convention center keynotes of years past, they're going for something that feels more like a conversation. Whether that translates into substantive technical announcements or just better vibes remains to be seen.

The "Copilot super app" framing is, I'll admit, the part I'm most skeptical about. Super apps have been promised by various Western tech companies for years, and they've consistently failed to materialize in the way that WeChat or Alipay function in China. The user behavior patterns are different, the regulatory environment is different, and the competitive landscape is different. When Microsoft says "super app," they probably mean something more modest: a unified interface for various Copilot capabilities that currently live in separate products. That would be useful! But it's not a super app in any meaningful sense of the term.

What I'd want to see from the reasoning model announcement, if I'm being honest about my wishlist, is actual technical detail. Benchmark performance on established reasoning tasks. Architecture information, even at a high level. Training data provenance. Comparison against existing models on tasks that matter to developers, not cherry-picked demos. The history of AI announcements at developer conferences is littered with impressive demonstrations that don't survive contact with real-world use cases. Microsoft has been better than some companies about eventually releasing technical documentation, but the keynote itself will almost certainly be light on the details that would let us evaluate whether this is genuinely new versus incremental over prior work.

The agentic capabilities mentioned in the reporting deserve particular scrutiny. Agent-based AI systems are having a moment, with various companies claiming breakthroughs in autonomous task completion. The reference to "OpenClaw-like tools" suggests Microsoft is positioning against specific competitors, though it's unclear whether this means they're building similar capabilities or explicitly trying to differentiate. Agentic AI is genuinely interesting research territory, but it's also an area where the gap between demo and deployment is often vast. The sample size of successful real-world agent deployments is small, and this hasn't been replicated at scale in ways that would make me confident in aggressive claims.

The conference keynote streams at 12:30PM ET on June 2nd, and I'll be watching with the kind of skepticism that comes from having attended too many of these events. Microsoft has real technical capabilities and genuine research depth. They also have a marketing apparatus that sometimes gets ahead of what the technology can actually deliver. Distinguishing between the two requires waiting for the technical documentation that usually follows these announcements by days or weeks.

What we can say with confidence is that Microsoft is betting heavily on AI as the future of its developer platform story. The Windows integration, the reasoning models, the Copilot expansion: these are all pieces of a larger argument that Microsoft's tools should be central to how developers build software in an AI-augmented world. Whether that argument is compelling will depend on details we don't have yet. The smaller venue might mean more intimate conversations with developers, or it might just mean Microsoft is managing expectations. Probably both, actually.
