Why the AI Stock Rally Doesn't Mean What You Think for Factory Floors

That last point is where I get skeptical. I called my old colleague at Siemens last week, just to get a sanity check. He's still in the thick of it, working on industrial automation projects. His take was basically that yes, there's more AI in the pipeline, but the actual deployment timelines are measured in years, not quarters. "The stock market thinks we're in 2030," he said. "We're not."

Now, I'm not saying the AI stuff is vapourware. I've seen some genuinely impressive computer vision applications for quality control. Predictive maintenance is getting better. But there's a difference between "this technology exists and works in controlled settings" and "this technology is deployed at scale and generating the returns these stock prices imply."

The Bloomberg piece mentions that this rally is happening "despite the Iran war," which is its own kind of strange. Markets are weird. But it does suggest that investors are betting on AI as a long-term structural shift, not just a short-term trade. Maybe they're right. I've been wrong before.

What I do know is that the factories I still visit (occasionally, when someone wants an old timer's opinion) aren't transformed overnight by stock market enthusiasm. They're still dealing with the same challenges: integration headaches, workforce training, the eternal question of whether to upgrade legacy systems or nurse them along for another few years. A Fanuc robot from 2015 doesn't suddenly get smarter because NVIDIA's stock price went up.

I suppose my point, if I have one, is that these market moves tell us something about expectations and capital flows. They don't tell us much about what's actually happening on factory floors in Guangzhou or Osaka or, for that matter, Detroit. The gap between financial markets and physical reality has always existed, but it feels particularly wide right now.

Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky. Wouldn't be the first time someone accused me of that. But when I see headlines about record highs driven by AI enthusiasm, I think about the plant managers I know who are still trying to get their MES systems to talk to their ERP systems. That's the unsexy work that actually moves the needle. It doesn't make for exciting stock charts, though.
