OMPL 2.0 Finally Gets Hardware Acceleration — About Time, Frankly

Speaking of weird things, there's a separate paper out this week that caught my eye. A group has developed something called AURA, which is basically a meta-planner that keeps replanning during execution while also optimising control inputs to reduce tracking error. The idea is you don't just plan once and execute, you continuously refine the trajectory as the robot moves and as uncertainty accumulates.

This is the sort of thing that sounds obvious until you try to implement it. Back in, must have been 2014 or so, we had a customer who wanted their welding cell to adapt to part variations in real time. We tried something conceptually similar and the software architecture turned into spaghetti within about three weeks. The AURA approach seems cleaner, at least on paper. They've tested it on real hardware, which is more than most motion planning papers bother with.

The tracking accuracy improvements are what interest me most. Industrial robots are remarkably precise when they're doing the same motion repeatedly, but throw in any uncertainty (thermal drift, payload variations, slightly worn gearboxes) and you start seeing deviations. Having the planner actively compensate during execution rather than just hoping the controller sorts it out, that's genuinely useful.

I called my old colleague at Siemens last week about something unrelated, and we ended up talking about this general trend. His take was that the gap between academic motion planning and what actually runs in factories is narrowing, slowly. I think he's right. Ten years ago, you'd read a paper about some clever algorithm and know it would never survive contact with a real production environment. Now, maybe it's 50/50.

The OMPL 2.0 release also includes better support for constrained motion planning and temporal logic goals, which is the sort of thing that matters if you're doing complex assembly tasks. I never personally worked much with temporal logic constraints (we mostly just wanted the arm to not hit things), but I know the automotive guys have been asking for better tools in this space.

One thing remains unclear to me: how much of this actually filters down to the integrators who are building cells today. OMPL has always been more of a research tool than something you'd deploy directly. Most industrial robots still run proprietary motion planners that the OEMs guard jealously. Whether OMPL 2.0 influences what ends up in the next generation of those proprietary systems, that's hard to say. Probably yes, eventually, in the way these things always trickle down.

Anyway. Good to see the library still being actively developed. Seventeen years is a long time to maintain open-source infrastructure, and the robotics community owes the OMPL team more credit than they usually get.
