Sim-to-Real Transfer Cracks Locomotion. Manipulation Is Next.

For locomotion, researchers have largely closed this gap through techniques like domain randomization, where the simulation deliberately varies conditions (surface textures, lighting, robot weight) so the learned behavior becomes robust to real-world variation.

Why is manipulation harder?

Walking involves relatively predictable contact between feet and ground. Manipulation, by contrast, requires handling objects of wildly different shapes, weights, and textures. A hand grasping a coffee mug needs to apply just enough force to lift it without crushing it or letting it slip.

The contact dynamics are more complex, the sensing requirements are more demanding, and the variety of possible tasks is essentially infinite. Simulating all of this accurately enough for effective transfer has proven far more difficult than simulating bipedal walking.

What comes next?

Researchers are now adapting the techniques that worked for locomotion to the manipulation domain. Early results suggest progress is accelerating, though the field has not yet achieved the same level of reliability seen in walking robots.

If sim-to-real transfer can be made to work reliably for dexterous manipulation, the implications are significant. Training robots in simulation is dramatically cheaper and faster than physical training. It would lower the barrier to deploying robots in warehouses, homes, and factories where they need to handle diverse objects.

The next few years will reveal whether manipulation follows the same trajectory as locomotion, or whether the added complexity demands fundamentally new approaches.
