Counter-drone is suddenly a $1.5 billion business, and I'm not surprised

Here's what I think is actually happening:

• Critical infrastructure operators (power plants, water treatment, logistics hubs) are being told by insurers and regulators to have some kind of drone detection capability
• The military counter-drone tech that proved itself in Ukraine is now being commercialized for civilian applications
• Companies like Motorola see a recurring revenue opportunity in airspace security services, not just hardware sales
• The detection side of the market (lidar, radar, RF sensors) is consolidating around a few key players who can integrate with interception systems

What remains unclear is how this all gets regulated. Right now, in the US, actually jamming or taking over a drone's signal is still legally murky for private entities. The FAA and FCC have overlapping jurisdiction, and nobody's quite sorted out who can do what. Motorola's presumably betting that regulatory clarity is coming, but I wouldn't hold my breath on the timeline.

Look, here's the thing. I spent over a decade building automation systems, and the one constant was that every new capability created new vulnerabilities. Drones are no different. The same technology that lets Amazon dream about delivery drones also lets bad actors do surveillance, smuggling, or worse. The counter-drone market was always going to exist; the only question was when it would get serious money behind it.

$1.5 billion is serious money. When I compare this to what detection systems cost back in 2019 (we're talking maybe $50,000 for a basic radar setup), the scale of investment now suggests the industry expects this to be a permanent, growing market. Whether that's justified or whether we're in a bit of a hype cycle, I genuinely don't know yet. The threat data is mostly anecdotal, and the companies selling solutions have obvious incentives to talk up the danger.

But my gut says this is real. I've been wrong before (I thought collaborative robots would take over faster than they did), but the combination of proven military tech, nervous facility managers, and big corporate money usually points somewhere.
