Slate's $24,950 EV Truck Is Interesting, But Let's Not Get Carried Away

From what's been reported, the answer is: quite a lot, deliberately. Slate's whole pitch is a stripped-down, customisable platform. No frills. You add what you want. It's sort of an interesting idea, philosophically, and it appeals to a certain kind of buyer who'd rather spec something out themselves than pay for features they don't want. I get the appeal. I've met plenty of engineers who think that way.

But I've also seen this pitch before, in industrial equipment, and it cuts both ways. The bare platform looks great on a budget spreadsheet until you start adding the things you actually need and you're back to the original price anyway. It remains unclear exactly how Slate's add-on pricing works, or whether the base configuration is genuinely usable for most buyers without significant extras. That's the question nobody can fully answer yet.

The Ford comparison is going to dominate the conversation after June 24th. Three hundred miles of range against whatever Slate is offering, at a five-thousand-dollar premium. Some buyers will pay that premium without blinking for the Ford badge and the dealer network alone. Others won't. The market's big enough for both, probably. What I'd watch is whether Slate can actually deliver at that price point in volume, which is a completely different engineering and logistics challenge from building a prototype or a small run.

This raises questions about... well, multiple things. Supply chain, mostly. Anyone paying attention to the EV space over the last few years knows that battery costs are the dominant variable, and they've been moving fast. Whether Slate locked in supply agreements that make $24,950 sustainable at scale, or whether that number is based on projections that look rosier than reality, we won't know for a while.

I'll be honest: I find the concept more interesting than most of what's come out of the EV truck segment lately, which has been heavy on spectacle and light on practicality. A genuinely affordable, no-nonsense work truck is something the market has been asking for. Whether Slate is actually that, or whether it's a clever marketing frame around a product that'll disappoint in practice, is too early to say. The June 24th announcement will tell us the price. The years after that will tell us everything else.
