One million businesses now use OpenAI. What does that actually mean?

What strikes me about the BBVA deal specifically is the framing around "AI-native banking." That's not "AI-assisted" or "AI-enhanced." Native implies something foundational, something you build around rather than bolt on. Whether a 165-year-old Spanish bank can actually become AI-native is a genuinely open question. Legacy systems, regulatory constraints, employee resistance (these are real barriers that don't disappear because you signed an enterprise contract).

The Gartner recognition is interesting context here. Being named an "Emerging Leader" in generative AI model providers puts OpenAI in a specific competitive frame. They're not the only game in town anymore. Anthropic, Google, and a growing list of open-source alternatives are all fighting for the same enterprise budgets. The one million number reads differently when you consider that OpenAI needs to demonstrate momentum to justify its valuation and fend off competitors who are, in some cases, offering comparable capabilities at lower prices.

I don't have access to the internal metrics that would tell us how sticky these enterprise relationships actually are. Churn rates, expansion rates, actual usage patterns within organizations, none of that is public. What we get instead are milestone announcements and carefully selected customer testimonials.

Here's what I think is actually happening, and I want to be clear this is interpretation, not reporting. Large enterprises are placing bets on AI infrastructure the same way they placed bets on cloud infrastructure a decade ago. Some of those bets will pay off. Some won't. The companies deploying ChatGPT to 120,000 employees are essentially running massive experiments with their own workforces. The results of those experiments will take years to fully understand.

The "one million businesses" framing is clever because it sounds like validation. A million customers can't be wrong, right? But a million customers can absolutely be in various stages of figuring out whether this technology actually works for them. Signing up is not the same as succeeding.

What I'd want to know, and what no press release is going to tell me, is this: of those million businesses, how many would say their AI investment has definitively paid off? How many are still in "wait and see" mode? How many have quietly scaled back after initial enthusiasm? Those numbers would tell a more complete story than any milestone announcement.

For now, what we can say is that OpenAI has achieved something real in terms of distribution. Getting enterprise software into a million organizations is not nothing. Whether that distribution translates into the kind of transformation the company promises, that remains genuinely unclear. The case studies sound impressive. The scale sounds impressive. But I've covered enough technology hype cycles to know that impressive announcements and impressive outcomes are not the same thing.

I'll be watching the BBVA and Deutsche Telekom deployments closely. If AI-native banking and AI-powered telecom actually materialize in ways customers can feel, that's a story. If these turn out to be expensive productivity tools that make some tasks slightly faster, that's a different story. Right now, we're somewhere in the middle, waiting to see which narrative holds up.
