The Enterprise AI Agent Race Is Missing the Point

The OpenAI angle

OpenAI's framing is similar but broader. They're talking about "company-wide AI agents" as the next phase, building on ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex adoption. The pitch is that organizations have already proven AI works for individual tasks. Now it's time to scale up.

I initially thought OpenAI had the advantage here because of their head start with enterprise deployments. But after reading more about the NVIDIA-ServiceNow approach, I'm less sure. Having the best language model doesn't automatically translate to having the best agent architecture. The ServiceNow integration might actually matter more than raw model capability for this use case.

Remains unclear which approach will prove more reliable in practice. We don't have enough deployment data yet to know.

The adoption gap nobody's talking about

Here's what bugs me about both announcements.

They assume organizations are ready for this. OpenAI's report emphasizes that enterprise AI adoption is accelerating, which is true. But there's a difference between "we use ChatGPT for drafting emails" and "we let AI autonomously execute multi-step business processes."

The governance structures aren't there. Most companies I've talked to (admittedly a limited sample, maybe 15-20 conversations over the past year) are still figuring out basic AI policies. Who's responsible when the AI makes a decision? How do you audit agent actions? What happens when an autonomous process conflicts with another autonomous process?

These aren't hypothetical concerns. Early agent systems have already shown what's possible, as NVIDIA notes. They've also shown what can go wrong. The demos are impressive. The edge cases are terrifying.

What this means for robotics

You might be wondering why I'm covering enterprise software agents on a robotics beat. Fair question.

The connection is embodied AI. The same architectural patterns being developed for enterprise agents (multi-step reasoning, autonomous action, operating in complex environments) are exactly what humanoid robots need. NVIDIA isn't just building enterprise tools. They're building the infrastructure that will eventually run physical agents too.

When a software agent messes up, you get a bad email or a broken workflow. When a physical agent messes up, you get property damage or worse. The stakes for getting autonomous action right in enterprise software are high. The stakes for getting it right in robotics are higher.

So in a way, enterprise AI agents are a testing ground. If we can't figure out governance, reliability, and failure handling for software agents, we're definitely not ready for embodied ones.

The uncomfortable question

I keep coming back to something NVIDIA wrote: "The next step is bringing those capabilities into enterprise environments."

Capabilities, sure. But also risks. Also failure modes. Also liability questions that nobody has good answers to yet.

The technology is moving faster than the organizational readiness. That's not necessarily bad (sometimes you have to deploy to learn), but it does mean we're going to see some spectacular failures in the next 12-18 months. Companies that rushed to deploy autonomous agents without thinking through the implications.

I think the winners in this space won't be whoever has the most powerful agents. They'll be whoever figures out the human-AI collaboration model that actually works in practice. The boring stuff: monitoring, intervention points, graceful degradation, clear accountability.

Neither NVIDIA nor OpenAI is really talking about that yet. They're selling capability. The market for reliability hasn't fully emerged.

But it will. Probably right after the first major autonomous agent disaster makes headlines.

What to watch

A few things I'm tracking:

• Deployment specifics: Both announcements are vague on actual use cases. Watch for case studies that show what these agents are actually doing, not just what they could theoretically do.
• Failure reporting: Will companies be transparent about agent mistakes? Probably not voluntarily. But the stories will leak.
• Regulatory response: Enterprise AI agents operating autonomously feels like something regulators will eventually care about. The EU especially.
• Insurance implications: Who covers losses from autonomous agent decisions? This is going to be a whole thing.

Honestly, I'm not sure whether to be excited or concerned about this push toward autonomous enterprise agents. Probably both. The potential productivity gains are real. So are the risks we don't fully understand yet.

The technology is ready. The question is whether we are.
