NVIDIA's Physical AI Push Is Less About Robots, More About Owning the Stack

You might be wondering: so what? Companies partner all the time.

The "so what" is this. If you're a robotics startup trying to build a humanoid or an autonomous system, you now have a choice. You can cobble together your own stack from various open-source tools, deal with compatibility nightmares, and spend months on infrastructure instead of your actual product. Or you can just... use the NVIDIA-Microsoft stack. It works. It's integrated. It probably performs better than whatever you'd build yourself.

That's not a neutral choice. That's a gravitational pull.

I should be clear about what we don't know yet. The announcements are light on specifics. We don't have pricing. We don't know exactly how locked-in developers would be. The "agent skills" for robotics sound promising, but I couldn't find details on what robots they've actually been tested with, or whether this works with hardware that isn't NVIDIA-powered. These are the questions I'd want answered before getting too excited or too worried.

What I do think is clear: NVIDIA has figured out that the money in robotics isn't in building robots. It's in being the platform everyone builds on. The picks and shovels play, as the VC cliché goes. Except this time the picks and shovels include the training environment, the deployment infrastructure, the cloud integration, and (of course) the chips.

There's something a little uncomfortable about this, tbh. The robotics industry has spent years talking about open ecosystems, interoperability, avoiding vendor lock-in. And here comes NVIDIA, basically saying: we'll make it so easy that you won't want to use anything else. That's a compelling pitch. It's also how platforms become gatekeepers.

I'm not saying this is necessarily bad. If NVIDIA's stack genuinely accelerates robotics development, if it helps smaller teams compete with better-resourced ones, that's a net positive. The alternative (everyone reinventing infrastructure wheels) isn't great either.

But I think we should be honest about what's happening. This isn't NVIDIA "enabling" physical AI research out of the goodness of their hearts. This is a company that dominates AI training hardware making a calculated bet that they can dominate AI deployment infrastructure too. The robotics angle is real, but it's part of a much bigger play.

Whether that's exciting or concerning probably depends on whether you're building on their platform or trying to compete with it. For most robotics companies right now, it's the former. And that's exactly what NVIDIA is counting on.
